NAMM 2012 Wrap-up

As I sit here on the last day of the winter NAMM 2012 show trying to make sure I have all the information I need to write the wrap-up, I have had 3 trips back in to confirm stuff, It is all such a blur. So many people, so many products, they start to blend over time.

I am so happy I had Colin and Nick with me on this trip. Colin took 99.999% of the pictures that I have posted (About  1000 shots), while Nick seemed to know every uke person out there and was key in getting some of the vendors warmed up so I could talk to with them. Also Nick and Colin are awesome uke players, so that was an added bonus to have them around to play the ukes and made wondering the halls a ton more fun.

I truly credit my current surge in visitors (60,000 in the past 3 days) to them being around and helping me get all the ukes and other fun stuff out to you.  On our first day we walked a little over 11 miles, and day after day they were very excited and willing to follow me aimlessly. For their hard work I am eternally grateful.

The show was absolutely insane. So many people trying to walk around and get information, make deals, and figure out what they want to do.  Covering the show from the perspective of the ukulele player to some would seem very limiting, but those are not ukulele players.  If I had to say what  the hot instrument of the show was, it would be the ukulele, but I may be a little biased.

I am going to break this down into a few sections: New and exciting,  Weird, and WTF?. I figured that a long drawn out article would get boring. I also have some pics that I am not going to talk about, but put captions on them so you know what is in them.

NEW and Exciting

I would have to say that the biggest story would have to be the Taylor Uke (Story). I was lucky to be able to play it before the show started, and as expected it was really nice. A lot of uke players thought it was nice, but maybe not worth the price tag of $9000 for the uke and guitar.

Kamoa Electics

Kamoa would have to have my top new ukulele for NAMM. The Steel string electric ukes are just out of this world, along with all their other ukes. I was standing outside the hall before they let us in and caught a glimpse for just a second and I knew they were my first stop. It is a tenor hollow body steel string uke and Kamoa does it better than anyone with the multiple bridge configurations and choice of colors. They also came out with a steel string uke bass, it is cool but I am not in love, some of my friends think it is the bee’s knees.

Over in the Gold tone booth they had a small builder called Beard guitars. They had a really cool Reso-Uke that sounded so nice. I happened to be sitting in the press area when the daughter of the guy that made it was sitting at the same table and told me they used a bass baffle to give it a much deeper tone, and I would say it does for sure.

Kiwaya Sopranano (super small uke), honestly I have no idea what to call it be side crazy small. At the Kiwaya booth they had 3 tiny ukes and they all played!! I really like the Hello kitty one. As you can see I look like a giant holding it. It is so small they had to use custom tuners on it. Don’t expect them to come to market any time soon. They range from $1100 – $1600 to make, Still on my list of ukes I would love to have.

From Flea market Music we saw 3 new things. The first being the polycarbonate fretboard on the firefly banjo uke. Not super new, but still… I like it. Another new option for the fire fly is a skin head option. It just gives it a little more punch. Also they just announced that they can do custom laser etched designs on the flea and Flukes. They showed one with a custom sound hole and also some custom flames. I may have to make an Ukeeku.com Fluke someday.

With the popularity of the ukulele it sometimes takes time for technology to catch up. There have been a few ukulele pickups on the market, but for the most part they are just acoustic guitar pickups with the wire wrapped up so it does not get all wrapped up. Now there are a couple pickups made specifically for the Ukulele. Mi-Si has one that is nice and small and can have volume and tone added, it uses L.R.Baggs new element that they use for their ukulele pickup.  Both are pretty cool. Not sure which one is better. The only real difference is that the Mi-Si uses a rechargeable element, while L.R. Baggs uses a small watch battery.

The last really interesting product that I ran into was PegHeds. I love mine on my Boat Paddle uke. He will be offering the tuners with real wood buttons and looking into really pretty hand carved tuner buttons. I hope that more makers would use them since they are so much lighter and I also think they look so classy.

One of the most fun things about the NAMM show would have to be all the “Famous” people that you meet. I stumbled in to the Taylor booth and saw the winner of the voice, Javier Colon, sing a few songs. On the ukulele side I was able to see Aldrine from UkuleleUnderground.com play a few times at the Kanile’a booth, also Rick Turner from Compass Rose was making a ukulele at the show. I also met Mike DaSilva and Tiki King. One of the biggest celebrities that we ran into was Mya walking around with her friends.

One of the things that blew our minds while walking around was the crazy amount of no-name ukes that are available from china. We kept running into so many weirdly named ukes from china. Many of the companies are looking for American distributers. My favorite named one was Strong Wind. For the most part they reminded us of the different ones that we know under different names. I wonder if the slow economy has driven them to try to up their sales or is the community so hot that these companies are trying to cash in on it. I found that a lot of them are just cheap crap-a-leles that you find in department stores and being peddled online as real ukes.

A really fun uke was the Fishuku. The body is shaped like a fish. What I could hear it was OK. Maybe a little expensive, but the novelty of it may be worth the extra money. Hoping to get a review one some time.

The weirdest uke would have to be the Tuna Uke from Lanikai. The idea is that the nut and bridge are adjustable. Not sure if it is such a good idea. I figure that if you buy a uke it should be right from the get go. They will offer the ukes in both the tuna uke and the regular bridge. Time will tell if it will be something.

A few people have commented on the new Mahalo surf ukes, a set of ukes and a lap steel all with the same surf board look and color scheme. I like the look and the fact that one is a nylon string and the other is a steel string uke. Not sure why they decided to do the lap steel, but hey, maybe a group could buy it and look the part at least.

Not that many crazy things that I thought were totally out there at this show. I saw a few ukes that are just toys, and I find that kind of stupid to have at a show with musicians. The other product that I would give the WTF award to would be the iPhone holder that looks like a uke. The neck does not do anything, it is just there for show. You use whatever app you want.

The last thing that made me do a double take would have to be an ad from Eddy finn, it just seems wrong coming from them. They are not that kind of company. By no means would I say they are some wholesome Christian company, nothing wrong with that, they are just a company that sells instruments that people buy as a first ukulele, not some hard core rock shop.

Non-Uke

The NAMM show covers a lot of instruments like drums, guitars, violins, kazoos to name a few. We saw a few products that we liked and thought ukulele people would think are cool.

The first new product comes from Blue Mics, it is there new higher end Mic called the Spark Digital. It can be plugged into an iPad (or iPhone) or USB. It has both connectors. It is a step above the Yeti that many of us love and currently use. The stand also has some isolation to help reduce noise when it is on a desk with a humming computer.

Another product that I have been receiving a few e-mails on was the footdrums. Very cool foot  operated drum kit. It has a snare, tambourine, shaker, and a bass drum. You control it all with your feet so you can be a one man band. They also have individual items too, like a tambourine or shakers. Just a really fun idea.

There were many other things that were cool, just not cool enough to stick in my brain after 3 days of walking around

Over All

I would have to say that there were a few things that we saw that seemed to keep recurring, the first would have to be that there were a few more steel string ukuleles. Some were good, but mostly they were bad. Kamoa is the only one that I thought got it right. The other thing that we saw where all the Chinese ukes from so many companies that we never heard of. One would not let us take pictures, it looked like an Ohana without a label on the heads stock.

The last thing would have to be the dude that seemed to be everywhere. He played at every booth it seemed like and ended up in a few shots that Colin took, It was just weird. Guy seemed nice, just kind of strange.

It is NAMM week!!! This is the biggest show of the year for all musical instruments, and I am lucky enough to cover it as press.

Stay tuned and I will be updating as much as I can. I will have all the coolest and newest ukulele and other stuff as the week goes on.  Make sure to watch tomorrow as I will have video and pics of a much anticipated new uke from a very big company.

Also this year I am not alone. Colin and Nick will be with me to help play and photograph. THIS IS GOING TO ROCK!!

Mighty MO Uke Fest Recap

I got home at 4:30 am today, and it took me until now to be able to sit down and write this. I was beat after such a great event.
For those who are confused; The first annual (At least I hope it happens again) Mighty MO Uke fest happened this past weekend in New Have, MO. Not a huge turn out, 40 people for the work shops and then a bunch for the open mic on friday and then concert Saturday. I did not get a lot of pictures. I was just having too much fun, sorry.

When I pulled up I had no idea what to expect. the area looked like a ghost town next to the river, very rustic. Hell my phone did not work unless I went next to the river and stood on a park bench and even then it was hit or miss.

It started out slow with a few people showing up at 12 on friday and our first workshop was under way. Jerry, of Boat Paddle ukes, had us come by his shop to talk about what to look for in a ukulele and showed us a good one and one that had issues. It was awesome being able to talk to someone who really studies and understands about every little detail that makes up a good instrument.

From there it was a crazy ride of jamming and talking, eating and open mics and workshops. The one thing I really dug was the fact that we were given time to just hang out and jam as we pleased. Maybe next year they will have more rooms done in the Riverfront Cultural Society area for a “Jamming” area when you don’t want to learn mouth trumpet (Been to it 2 other times with Victoria, figured 3rd time would really kill my skills)

The people who put it on really did an amazing job of making it really laid back and fun. never felt like I had to be anywhere at any time, except for the 3 meals, but really that was pretty relaxed also.

The concert was fun. We learned who won the different silent auctions, Lisa from Florida won the Firefly. Victora stole it and played a song. Also the St. Louis Ukulele Fight Club did a set, along with the Flea Bitten Dawgs performed. all in all it was so much fun.

Winter NAMM 2011 Big Report

Well, Winter NAMM 2011 is over and I am on my home (back to reality) so I figured I would do a big recap.  The last four days have whizzed by so fast, it is a blur of meeting vendors and walking around with 2 of the most fun people in the world (Sally and Mim).

Below I will break down stuff so you can skip around and not have to read all the boring stuff.

Trends

I have noticed a few trends with the ukulele during NAMM. The first is that ukuleles are still exploding and the market is growing, this is past fad. I was asked so many times what was going on and all I could say is that the uke is here to stay.

Pono Bamboo ukulele

Another trend is bamboo. I did a review of the Paulele already, and waiting on the Cordoba, but I saw several bamboo ukes from Pono, and I carried a Tall grass uke with me to NAMM to show people. I think it is the fact that people are trying to be more eco-friendly and trying new materials. Bamboo seems like the one for now, not sure how it will last. All I can say is that the Pono one hits every wicket on looks, quality, and sound.

YES! a Fluke banjo uke.

The last one is Banjo ukes. Gold Tone has had the Banjolele for a long time, but it is well above the $300 mark. The holy grail, if you will, is below $300. Morgan Monroe (soon to be Eddy Finn) was the first 6” open back banjo uke that I saw at summer NAMM, but now I can find the exact same one from aNueNue and several other people.  It was funny, I went to Chesbro (Eleuke) and said “ Wow! No banjo ukes.” They responded with “wait another month or two” so it seems that everyone is getting in on the game and they seem to be all from the same factory. On the Banjo uke trend there are 2 companies that have ones out or coming out very soon, and they could not be any different. Mainland has their close back concert with a much larger head than all the little 6” head ones you see everywhere, and Flea Market Music (Flea and Flukes) banjo uke made from a small hand drum.

New products

There were so many new products, these are the ones that caught my eye.

Martin S1- I was lucky enough to get one a few days before NAMM and wrote some first impressions on it. LINK

Kala Ukadelics- We knew they were coming out with these, and they are a ton of fun. So many fun designs and they play pretty well, I think they will be about $120. For anyone who wants some fun designs and a pretty good uke, this is a winner.

Gold Tone Reso uke – Yes it will be $400 but it is a really awesome rose copper color and is a lot less than any other reso uke out there.

Eddy Finn Ukes – SHS will be making these fun ukes and they range in price from $100 – $400. As you can see the sound hole is very fun with the fin, but it is even cooler than that. When I picked one up I was thinking I was going crazy, I smelled pineapples. The Ukes are rubbed with a coconut and pineapple oil so they will smell awesome. So unique and just par for the course for SHS. Ask Mim of Mim’s Ukes in Charlotte NC about them, she is getting a few of them right away. I will also getting some for review in February.

Flea Market Music Banjo Uke – I was told they will be available soon and be going for $220, but they are working on a poly fret board version to get the price down. I have to say they are a ton of fun and the lightest banjo ukulele you will find. They sound awesome to boot with the open back. When I asked about the body they said “if your wife hits you over the head with it and crack the body we can replace it pretty easily” I said “Do you know my Wife?”
On top of the banjo uke they also came out with a ton of new designs. I really dig the retro countertop design.

More Fluke banjo Ukes, coming March

Big Island Mango – I did a review last year of a SP-KT and loved it, but now they also have mango and mahogany ukes. The mahogany look like the others, but the mango are just eye catching. Sally and I fell in love with them. They will be another Uke that Mim will carry when they come out in the next few months.

Eleuke Peanut – The one I saw was a prototype and will look different than the one pictured (Square head and a little longer butt to make it easier to hold) and they are aiming at sub $100 for it, and they have the same guts as all the other Eleukes, should be awesome. I hope to review one when they come to market.

Kala Solid UBass – I think this is really cool. I am not a fan of acoustic basses, seems like a waste. You can’t really get a loud sound out of one when a good uke is going. You have to plug it in anyways. They are so light and small; I think regular bass players will get one to travel with or to be unique.

Spider Capo – So how many times are you like “man I wish I could change my tuning without having to retune the whole uke? We were sitting in the press area and they did a press conference on this product. It looks like fun. I was lucky enough to get one for review. I will play with it and a contest of sorts will happen in the near future. I will keep you posted.

Beside annoying vendors for review stuff I was lucky enough to do some really fun things like the big uke jam that Aldrine from UkuleleUnderground.com organized, and then going to dinner with a big group of UU people, including Aldrine and Aaron of UU; nothing but laughter. Sally made a video of those that were there.

I walked by a ton of famous people, beside Aldrine who played at least 5 gigs. I saw the bass player from Blink182, Jonny 5, Steve Vai, Michael Anthony,  and many people signing autographs that I had no clue about.  I would just walk by and look. It was weird. I Know Sally saw Glen Campbell. All in all it is weird to see them walking around.

Here is a video that will blow your f-ing mind socks off! 11 string bass plugged into an amp that runs on battery and a pedal box that also runs on battery.

I also was lucky that the two people that came with me are way too much fun.  We had so many inside jokes and did nothing but laugh; there are so many great stories.

Every booth I went to, Mim and Sally would get to later, they would talk Ukeeku.com up and make sure that they remembered me, it was just awesome.

Just thought I would post a quick thing about 2 events I am really excited about that are coming up soon.

I am really excited because this is kind of a UWC thing where people come, camp, and there is an open mic. Should be a blast! Although I dont know of any ukulele fests for the midwest in July, it is still going to be a good begining for ukulele playing.

Miss Joni is writing for Nuvo again and has a great post about what is going on at the Bluestone Folk School in the next week or so. A short list is the Meat and Taters Ukulele intensive (July 5-9, 2010), Bi-monthy Bluestone uke meet-up (July 8, 20100), and a Uke only open mic (July 9, 20210). I will be there on the 9th around 7pm.

Summer NAMM 2010

I love tradeshows. I like meeting new people and seeing new stuff. I have been to a few technology shows since by day I do computer stuff and am also a computer nerd along with a ukulele nut. Both actually come in handy from time to time.

The atmosphere at NAMM is over whelming in so many ways. You want to look at everything and the noise from all the instruments is deafening at times. It made it real hard to hear the instruments or to take any kind of video that you could hear anything on. The summer NAMM is pretty much just one giant room, not like winter, so I am told, were it is several floors and there is an acoustic floor. I really hope I can make it to that one.

While at NAMM I talked with a ton of people and vendors about everything about ukuleles, straps, and home recording.  I have about 30 different business cards from the vendors alone and I also made a couple connections with people that sell them like Mim from Mim’s Ukes. She Has a Hawaiian shaved ice store and she also sells ukuleles there (and online) in Charlotte North Carolina. Also in the post before this I have a pic of Chris Martin of martin guitars holding 2 of his ukes.

Funny story about Meeting Chris Martin, I actually almost knocked him over coming out of the Martin booth, so I stopped and asked if I could take his picture and he said sure. The funny part was that I texted 2 of my friends that were with me that I had just met Chris Martin. They thought I met the Chris Martin from Coldplay. It was not until I showed them the picture that they realized who I actually met. and for the record I would rather meet the Chris Martin that I met. Very cool and nice enough to talk with me for 5 minutes

Bamboo Pauleles

Bamboo ukes from Kiwaya called Pauleles. Played nicely and I am hoping that I will have a chance to review one along with their Kiwaya KS-1. I don’t have a picture since it was not at NAMM, but Cordoba is also coming out with a bamboo uke very soon.

Banjo ukuleles from Morgan Monroe, and they are under $300 street price!!!  That to me seems like one of the holy grails right now. They are loud and really well built. I am hoping that sometime in November, when they catch up with orders, to get one in my hands to review and show people.

So, I was at the Saga Music booth looking at the Mahalos and I see what I know to be a camp ukulele, but I look at it and it says banjo ukulele. I scratched my head and laughed a little. An owner of a music shop wanted to know what I was laughing at. She thought I was being condescending about the products on the wall. Yes they are on the lower end, but they are still ok. I said to her “that is not a banjo ukulele” She asked then what is it because she has one in her store an no one will buy it. I told her that it is a camp ukulele, I have seen several of them and it is called that. She rushed over and grabbed the sales guy and told him “you need to talk to this young man, he knows his stuff!!” I proceed to tell him what it is and he pulls out a pen and changes the name of it on the little tag hanging with it and tells the marketing guy to also change the name in the catalog. It was a good feeling to have someone change something because you recommend it. Excuse me as I go deflate my huge head.

One of the interesting ukuleles I saw were the Oriolo ukes. The Oriolo family owns  Felix the cat and the brothers decided to start a guitar company. They look fun. I like the way they did the base with Felix’s head, his nose is a knob of some sort.

On the topic of interesting design, Boulder Creek Guitars had a booth showing off their guitars and ukuleles. They are the ones with the off-set front sound hole and one on  the side. They have the regular laminate mahogany and a line of solid wood ukes, but they are also coming out with a couple with a printed top. The designs are fun. One with a wave and the other with a golf theme.

For completely crazy design I would give that to Eleuke. A “tie dye” electric. I like the idea, I am not in love with the colors they used.

We cannot leave Kala out. They had all of their well known products like the U-bass, and that is all the guitar and bass people talked about, and the travel ukuleles. They had 2 things that I really thought were cooler than everything else. The pocket uke and the new 10 watt “Round about” amps.

The last new thing that I will talk about is from Papas Boxes. I did not even know they were going to be there. I just ran into their booth.  They now make whole ukuleles and they are beautiful. They use lasers to etch the boxes and cut the holes. It was fun to go to a booth where the owner is really happy to meet you. I think they will be very successful with their new instruments along with the kits.

I can dream can’t I? I had to stop by the Collings booth. I played the one pictured and it is like butter. I also played a Santa Cruz, and a few of the high end Big Island Ukuleles ( I was able to take their least expensive home for a review, a SP-KRGT, so watch the site for the review). Also while I was at the Kiwya booth Augutino LoPrinzi ukuleles was also in the same booth. Very very nice ukuleles. the one pictured was really neat with the 2 shoulder holes, very loud. If I say loud I mean it, it was loud in the convention center.

Ukuleles are popular. They are blowing up. I heard from several companies that their ukuleles sales are 75% of their sales in the last few months, so with that people want to jump into it also.  I saw several like the ones below that are toys and not real instruments by any means. that makes me mad. Just don’t make them or carry them if they are such junk.

Not sure how I feel about ukulele lamps. I want one, don’t get me wrong, I just feel bad for the little guy.

I need to thank all the vendors that I talked to, I am a total spaz at times and I was also sweating like crazy, so embarrassing. Also my two friends, Paul and Marc, for hanging with me and not beating me while trying to leave and I get lost at another booth that caught my eye, and spreading the word about Ukeeku to everyone you saw.
