I have a very similar one, and a couple that are close.
Indeed they all say don’t do anything to the “vintage” parts, however I wanted to Play it and tune it!
I bought some grover machine heads and put them on the one like yours (two “f” holes in the back) and It worked fine. The original pegs were carved pieces of wood that I really didn’t want to fool around with. This one is being sent to my brother as I start another.
